CAROLINE WATSON EXHIBITION DATES: 8th JANUARY to 12th MARCH

Inspired by the enigmatic landscapes of memory, the ephemeral realm of dreams, and the formative experiences of childhood, Caroline’s art delves into the shadowy corners of the unconscious, exploring our fascination with the uncanny. Employing techniques such as active imagination, the fluid logic of dreams, and the evocative power of pareidolia, she navigates the weird spaces and infinite expanses of the psyche. Her work exists in a liminal state, poised between beauty and the sinister, striving to create pieces that are simultaneously attractive and unnerving, drawing the viewer in while unsettling their sense of reality.

Caroline often utilises landscapes and interior spaces as the stage for her dramas. These settings, though seemingly familiar, become the backdrop for bizarre narratives that, despite their strangeness, resonate with profound psychological truths about the human condition. Her paintings capture these theatrical moments, inviting viewers to decipher the hidden meanings and unravel the tangled threads of the story.

Beyond her canvases, Caroline’s creative practice extends to the tangible world. She constructs puppets and other three-dimensional works from an array of recycled materials, including wood scraps, remnants of old fabrics, and papier-mâché. These objects serve multiple purposes: they become elements of small, immersive installations, act as props or inspiration for her paintings, or are arranged into photographic tableaux, further blurring the lines between reality and the imagined. In some instances, these creations stand alone as independent artworks, possessing their own unique narratives and adding another layer to Caroline’s multifaceted exploration of the unconscious. Through this diverse range of media, Caroline constructs a cohesive and compelling vision, inviting viewers to confront the strange and often unsettling beauty that lies just beneath the surface of the everyday.

Caroline’s work at Studio Three is a selection of paintings from the last ten years.

HARRIET TEMPLE EXHIBITION DATES 7th FEBRUARY TO  5th APRIL

Having spent most of her life in the heart of Somerset, Harriet nurtured a dream that finally took shape three years ago upon her departure from the working world: the acquisition of her own glass fusing kiln. This pivotal purchase marked the beginning of an intensive journey of artistic exploration. Since then, she has immersed herself in the captivating world of glass, diligently honing her skills through a combination of formal workshops and training courses, supplemented by countless hours of experimental practice. This dedication has allowed her to master a diverse range of techniques and unlock the boundless potential of her chosen medium.

While glass remains Harriet’s primary material, her artistic vision extends beyond its inherent beauty. She thoughtfully incorporates reclaimed and repurposed elements, such as copper tubing, weathered driftwood, and wood offcuts, to construct unique frames and structural supports for her glass creations. This sustainable approach not only adds an intriguing textural dimension to her work but also reflects her commitment to environmental consciousness. The sheer versatility of glass, available in a spectrum of forms from finely ground powders and vibrant enamels to various grades of frits, intricate murrhines, delicate canes, and substantial sheets, provides Harriet with an inexhaustible palette of possibilities. This vast array of materials, combined with the transformative power of the kiln, allows her to continually push the boundaries of her artistic expression.

Harriet’s artistic process involves a delicate interplay of control and chance. She employs a unique form of painting, meticulously layering glass powders and enamels to create intricate designs and vibrant hues. Simultaneously, she skillfully cuts, fuses, and manipulates sheet glass, transforming it into both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Her creations range from functional flat pieces, such as decorative window panes and eye-catching garden panels, to more sculptural and whimsical works, including lifelike flowers, stylized birds, and other organic forms. Throughout this process, Harriet maintains a deep understanding of the transformative potential of the kiln, expertly manipulating its varying temperatures to achieve the desired effects, from subtle textures to dramatic fusions.

Harriet’s work is deeply rooted in her connection to the Somerset landscape. The rolling hills, vibrant flower gardens, and tranquil countryside provide a constant source of inspiration. Interwoven with these natural influences is a touch of the fantastical, as she occasionally introduces mythical beasts and folkloric figures into her creations, adding a layer of narrative and intrigue to her art. Through her skilful manipulation of glass and her imaginative vision, Harriet creates pieces that are not only visually stunning but also tell a story, inviting the viewer to connect with the beauty and wonder of the natural world, tinged with a hint of magic.

SOPHIA STARK EXHIBITION DATES 6th FEBRUARY TO 1st April

Sophia Stark’s artistic journey is deeply intertwined with a lifelong passion for recycling and repurposing. This inherent inclination to give new life to discarded objects has become the essence of her creative practice. Sophia possesses a keen eye for the unusual, the quirky, and the inspiring – those overlooked treasures that others might deem worthless. She meticulously collects these discarded materials, amassing a diverse and eclectic stockpile of potential artistic components. Her collection isn’t simply a random assortment of cast-offs; it’s a carefully curated library of possibilities, each piece holding a unique story and waiting for its chance to be reborn.

Sophia’s creative process is one of patient gestation. She doesn’t rush the transformation of her found objects. Instead, she allows the materials to speak to her, carefully considering their inherent qualities, textures, and forms. She contemplates their past lives and imagines their potential futures, allowing ideas to percolate and evolve in her mind. This period of reflection is crucial, as it allows her to discover the hidden narratives within the discarded materials. She seeks to understand not only their physical properties but also their emotional resonance, their connection to memory and time.

It’s in this space of thoughtful consideration that the spark of inspiration ignites. A seemingly mundane object, perhaps a piece of rusted metal, a shard of broken glass, or a discarded toy, will suddenly trigger a creative impulse. An idea emerges, fully formed or gradually taking shape, and the transformation begins. Sophia’s artistic process is less about imposing a preconceived notion onto the materials and more about collaborating with them, allowing their inherent characteristics to guide the creative direction. She works intuitively, responding to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by each piece.

The resulting creations are far from mere assemblages of recycled materials. They are intricate and thought-provoking artworks that transcend their humble origins. Sophia’s skill lies in her ability to not only repurpose materials but also to imbue them with new meaning. Her finished pieces often tell stories, evoke emotions, and challenge viewers to reconsider their own relationship with consumption and waste. They are a testament to the power of imagination and the transformative potential of art, demonstrating that beauty and inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. Sophia’s art is a celebration of second chances, a reminder that even the discarded can be reborn and given a new purpose, a new story, and a new life.

STEPHANO BALDON EXHIBITION DATES: 11th JANUARY TO  8th MARCH

Stephano’s art is a vibrant celebration of colour, a riotous explosion of pigments that pulsates with raw energy. Based in the coastal town of Portishead, just outside of Bristol, this artist draws deeply from the dynamic environment that surrounds him. His abstract works are not simply representations of his surroundings; they are visceral responses to them, attempts to capture the very essence of the world’s energy through the expressive power of paint. He wields acrylics with a bold and unrestrained hand, layering rich pigments and vivid hues to create canvases that seem to vibrate with an inner light. His palette is a symphony of saturated tones, a testament to the boundless spectrum of colours that exist in the natural world and in the realm of his imagination.

Stephano’s artistic process is a dynamic interplay between observation and imagination. He doesn’t merely replicate what he sees; he internalises it, filters it through the lens of his creative vision, and then translates it into a language of pure colour and form. His canvases become a stage for imaginative concepts, where abstract shapes and swirling lines interact to create thought-provoking compositions. These works are not simply decorative; they are imbued with a sense of narrative, inviting viewers to explore their depths and discover their own interpretations. They are a visual manifestation of Stephano’s inner world, a glimpse into how he perceives and experiences the world around him.

More than just capturing the energy of his surroundings, Stephano seeks to evoke an emotional response from his audience. His art is an invitation to connect with the world on a deeper level, to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, and to find beauty in the unexpected. Whether depicting the bustling energy of a city street, the serene tranquillity of a coastal landscape, or the untamed power of a storm, his paintings aim to transcend the mundane and ignite the imagination. He strives to bridge the gap between the viewer and the world, to bring them closer to the inherent beauty that often goes unnoticed in the rush of everyday life. Through his bold use of colour and his expressive abstract language, Stephano’s art becomes a powerful conduit, channelling the energy of the world and transforming it into a visual experience that is both captivating and transformative. His canvases are not just paintings; they are portals to a world of vibrant emotions and boundless imagination.
