CURZON CINEMA AND ARTS https://www.curzon.org.uk

IN THE HEIGHTS 2.30pm Run Time 143mns Rating PG

In the Heights centers on a variety of characters living in the neighborhood of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighborhood get a dose of what it means to be home.

THE FATHER 7.30pm Run Time: 97mns Rating: 12A

Anthony (Academy Award Winner, Anthony Hopkins) is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne (Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, Olivia Colman), encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unraveling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? THE FATHER warmly embraces real life, through loving reflection upon the vibrant human condition; heart-breaking and uncompromisingly poignant — a movie that nestles in the truth of our own lives.

SOUTH WEST SILENTS: THE MARK OF ZORRO – NEIL BRAND LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT AND Q&A 7.30pm Run Time: 115mns Rating: PG

Classed as the world’s first action-adventure film, Fred Niblo’s The Mark of Zorro (1920) not only gave birth to a genre but established a new persona for star Douglas Fairbanks. Just like Fairbank’s masked hero the film catapulted him from standard film actor to one of Hollywood’s first super stars. Elements of the film and Fairbanks’ portrayal would later inspire Bob Kane’s most famous of heroes, Batman.

Set in Spanish California Fairbanks portrays Don Diego Vega, a comically effete young nobleman with a taste for tasselled sombreros and juvenile silk-hanky magic tricks. But when danger calls, Diego swathes himself in black, straps on a well-honed sword and storms the countryside as the mysterious Zorro. Slicing his initial into the faces of the “sentinels of oppression” and pausing only to boldly romance the woman (Marguerite De La Motte) to whom his shy alter-ego can hardly summon the courage to speak.

The Mark of Zorro is an uplifting escape adventure with the thrills which would be copied the world over throughout the rest of the history of cinema. This special screening is co-produced with South West Silents and will have live musical accompaniment with musician and broadcaster Neil Brand.

Live Piano Accompaniment by Neil Brand with new restoration by Lobster Films, Paris.

SEASIDE CINEMA: FINDING NEMO 10.00am Run Time: 96mns Rating U

What better way to watch this Pixar classic than with the sea breeze flowing through your lungs on a Saturday morning. Finding Nemo follows the momentous journey of an overly protective clownfish named Marlin (voice by Albert Brooks) and his son Nemo (voice by Alexander Gould) — who become separated in the Great Barrier Reef when Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from his ocean home and dumped into a fish tank in a dentist’s office. Buoyed by the companionship of Dory (voice by Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly-but-forgetful Pacific regal blue tang, Marlin embarks on a dangerous trek and finds himself the unlikely hero of an epic effort to rescue his son — who hatches a few daring plans of his own to return safely home.

This screening is on the Salthouse Fields and doors will open at 4.00pm. Go down early and grab a drink from the bar or some food from a variety of delicious local food stalls. SEASIDE CINEMA: THE LION KING (1994) 1.30pm Run Time: 134mns Rating 12A

Disney’s classic animated musical with its legendary songbook is our Seaside Cinema film on Saturday afternoon. The Lion King presents the story of one lion cub’s journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny. Simba begins life as an honoured prince, the son of the powerful King Mufasa (voiced, of course, by James Earl Jones). The cub’s happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle, Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons), murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom. In exile, the young lion befriends the comically bumbling pair of Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat, and lives a carefree jungle life. As he approaches adulthood, however, he is visited by the spirit of his father, who instructs him to defeat the nefarious Scar and reclaim his rightful throne. Borrowing elements from Hamlet, classical mythology, and African folk tales, The Lion King tells its mythic coming-of-age tale with a combination of spectacular visuals and lively music, featuring songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and a score by Hans Zimmer.

This screening is on the Salthouse Fields and doors will open at 4.00pm. Go down early and grab a drink from the bar or some food from a variety of delicious local food stalls. This is an outdoor event so please check the weather forecast beforehand and dress appropriately. If it rains the show will go on. SEASIDE CINEMA: AGAINST THE TIDES + TALK WITH BETH FRENCH – SWIMMING UNDER THE SKY 10.00am Run Time: 180mns Rating 12A

Against the Tides is an award-winning feature-length documentary that follows marathon swimmer and world record holder Beth French, as she sets out to conquer Oceans Seven, a challenge consisting of the seven most dangerous sea-channels in the world. For extreme swimmers, it’s the ultimate test; the equivalent to the seven peaks in mountaineering. Very few people have ever completed it, but Beth aims to become the first person ever to swim all seven in one year.

It took Beth five years to prepare for the challenge, cost her tens of thousands of pounds and involved hundreds of supporters. Driven to set an example for her autistic son and by her battle with a lifelong, debilitating illness M.E. (a.k.a. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), Beth travels across continents to far-flung corners of the world, where land meets sea.

Once in the water, Beth confronts jellyfish, sharks, hypothermia, wild weather and mind-numbing fatigue, as well as her own inner demons. Each swim can take up to 20 hours, often through the night. Immersed in the waves, Beth is in her element:

“Being in water gives me freedom… it’s where I belong”.

Beth is joining the Curzon team in person for a Q&A after the film.

This screening is on the Salthouse Fields and doors will open at 4.00pm. Go down early and grab a drink from the bar or some food from a variety of delicious local food stalls.
