“You can’t beat the feeling you get from sharing a space with a live audience and performers. The humanity, the intimacy and the sense of community that come from these shared experiences seem to me to be right at the heart of being human. Projects such as The Theatre Shop thrive because committed and passionate people can work a special magic in small successful communities like Clevedon.”
PETER LORD, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, AARDMAN
It was a happy day when the ‘Theatre Shop’ managed by Theatre Orchard and locally based theatre company ‘Living Spit’ opened its doors in Clevedon. Set in the heart of the town in Queen’s Square, tucked between Superdrug and Boots, this once empty retail unit now offers a rich programme of performances at the shop itself as well as throughout the town! It comes complete with its own bijou bar, serving a range of locally produced beverages before and after shows.
The Theatre Shop enjoys excellent relations with the people of Clevedon and are happy to work with volunteers from the community as indeed they are happy to hire out the shop for rehearsal and arts event space. Clevedon Pride funded the printing of their first season’s brochure. FACES of Clevedon are huge fans of The Theatre Shop and are looking forward to supporting and promoting their work.
I love the theatre because it’s synonymous with escapism – entry into another world where for a short period of time the outside world ceases to exist. The reason I particularly love ‘The Theatre Shop’ is because it is underpinned by everything that is important to me: it’s inclusive, it’s diverse and its community based.
‘Step into Spring at Theatre Shop!’
The new programme of shows at Theatre Shop has plenty in store this Spring. The season springs into action with the award-winning ‘Let Me Look at You’, a compelling, personal story from the gay “movement”, followed by a cracking Easter time, with brilliant puppets from Pickled Image in ‘Woodland Tales with Granddad’ and a world-premiere of ‘The Time Machine’ from North Somerset’s very own Mumblecrust Theatre.
Theatre Shop favourites, Living Spit, are back with their ‘Living Quiz’, along with ‘Les Gloriables’ from ‘Gloriator’ creators Spitz & Co, ‘Sing Happy’ from the amazing Kate Dimbleby and poetry from the nationally renowned Luke Wright with ‘Poet Laureate’. Plus loads more fantastic shows and activities, including North Somerset Arts Week, theatre sessions for young people, bespoke business workshops and ‘Aftermirth’, a daytime comedy club for Mums and their babies!
