Wilfred and Alice, one of Hill Road’s gems is a family business, run by the husband and wife team Julia and Nathan Jakeways, although other family members are often to be seen behind the counter. I discovered a couple of years ago that the shop is actually named after Julia’s great grandparents, Wilfred and Alice.
Wilfred and Alice opened in the summer of 2006 in Alexandra Road but recently moved to Hill Road where they have a very large, light, airy space with every unit, shelf, rack and table laden with the most fabulous range of goods – some fun and some functional but all well designed and top quality. The layout of the space makes browsing very easy, which I do very often!
Wilfred and Alice house a really diverse range of goods and so many lovely brands such as Hook Line & Sinker, Bath House, Clima, Lisa Angel, Portico, Alice Scott, Suck UK Parlane Kids, Just Trade, Plan Toys, Green Dreamer, Orla Kiely, Brights and Stripes, Newgate clocks, Luckies of London, Kokeshi, Whitby and Mooredale, Momiji, Sia Kids …………….the list is endless, you really need to go and check it out for yourself! I particularly love their retro games and toys which are so reasonably priced; the traditional kites have been a real hit with family and friends. Regardless of your age, gender, budget or the occasion, you will find something at Wilfred and Alice.
Wilfred and Alice are on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/wilfredandalice/ and I love the fact that their banner promotes single use plastic and carries the hashtag #stopthe100 billion. This hashtag refers to the 100 billion single-use cups that go to landfill every year and promotes the use of Ecoffee cups. Theses cups are made from bamboo fibre and are BPA and phthalate free; they have some lovely ones in the shop.
