STUDIO 3 WELCOMES A WAVE OF NEW TALENT!

Welcome to our latest Studio 3 blog! Before we start sharing details of the upcoming guests, we’d like to reassure you that Studio 3 and all the businesses at Clevedon Craft Centre are open as usual.

As part of North Somerset Council’s commitment to improving the district’s roads, they are carrying out carriageway resurfacing works on Court Lane and Manmoor Lane. The businesses are naturally concerned that this might deter people from visiting, but clear diversion signs are in place, and council staff will be located within the road closures to advise you on access arrangements.

Works commenced yesterday, 16th June 2025, for a period of ten days, and the road will be closed between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Back to the blog! We’re delighted to introduce our newest lineup of guest artists, each bringing a unique vision and captivating works to this relaxed, contemporary space in Clevedon. From intricate drawings inspired by nature to vibrant mixed-media pieces and evocative paintings of diverse landscapes, the July and August exhibitions promise to inspire and engage. Get ready to discover the incredible talent of Adam Taylor, Suzanne Woodward, Margaret Micklewright, Anna Warsop, Liz Williams, and our very own Clevedon-based artist, Rachael Cawley. Join us as we delve into their artistic journeys, explore their inspirations, and highlight what makes their work truly special.

ADAM TAYLOR EXHIBITION DATES: 11th JUNE TO 9th JULY 2025

Bristol-based artist Adam creates captivating drawings in charcoal, pencil, and soft pastels on paper, working both outdoors and in the studio. For Adam, nature is always the fundamental starting point. It provides a profound sense of continuity, perspective, and a timeline that utterly disregards human presence. Despite this indifference, he feels an intrinsic connection—a tiny cog within a colossal machine—a profound sense of belonging. This deep-seated feeling, interwoven with his personal life experiences, forms the wellspring of their artistic expression.

Adam’s work primarily explores landscapes, people, and his environment. Trees, in particular, are a cherished subject. When observing an ancient oak, perhaps five centuries old, that has serenely endured countless seasons, indifferent to generations of humanity and teeming with its ecosystem of flora and fauna, it transcends the mere definition of a tree. He sees it as an individual, turning it into a personal portrait.

Life drawings are an integral part of Adam’s discipline and have subtly, yet significantly, influenced his broader work. He is currently developing a series of intriguing and uniquely blended drawings that explore these interwoven themes. Beyond these explorations, he also produces drawings and prints depicting familiar and visited locations, including evocative views of Bristol and other places.

SUZANNE WOODWARD EXHIBITION DATES: 9th JULY TO 13th AUGUST 2025

Suzanne is an artist who masterfully blends experience and imagination in her captivating water-based mixed-media artwork, primarily created on recycled paper. Her unique narratives are deeply inspired by the rich tapestry of dreams, mythology, meditations, and personal ruminations.

She creates her evocative images using gouache, watercolour, ink, and watercolour pencils. She especially enjoys employing the fascinating resist technique. This is a clever art method where Suzanne applies a substance to the paper, such as wax or a special liquid, that prevents paint from sticking. Then, when she adds her colours over the top, those resistant areas remain untouched or show through, creating intriguing patterns, textures, and defined shapes that add a unique depth to her work.

When she’s not immersed in her creative process, Suzanne enjoys family life in Somerset and dedicates her time to volunteering at Oxfam.

MARGARET MICKLEWRIGHT EXHIBITION DATES: 11th JULY TO 5th SEPTEMBER.

Margaret is a Scottish painter who has found her artistic home in the beautiful landscapes of Somerset. There’s something truly exhilarating about her approach to painting en plein air, especially when the elements are at their most challenging. She is endlessly inspired by wild, untamed places, those hidden corners of the world where human presence feels minimal. Her focus often turns to the powerful, ever-shifting relationship between land and water—be it the vastness of the sea or the serene expanse of a lake.

Since graduating from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, ink has been Margaret’s constant companion and a medium she continually strives to push to its limits. She loves experimenting with a wet-on-wet technique, often relayering wet ink to create unique textures and depths. Beyond ink, she also works with oils and finds immense satisfaction in the beautiful ambiguity that comes with creating monoprints using oil paints.

Sharing her passion for ink is something Margaret truly enjoys. She runs workshops designed to help others explore this wonderful medium and build their confidence in using it.

The paintings she creates are a reflection of her travels, from the rolling hills and dramatic coastlines of Somerset right through to the rugged beauty of Orkney and the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland. Each piece tells a story of her connection to these places.

For any enquiries about her work, or if you’re interested in commissioning a piece, please don’t hesitate to contact her. Visit Margaret’s website and check her out on Instagram,

ANNA WARSOP EXHIBITION DATES: 12th JULY TO 9th AUGUST 2025

Anna’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in her fascination with aerial landscapes and maps, which provide her with a unique lens through which to view the world. Her paintings aim to evoke a profound sense of wonder and awe, inviting viewers to experience the world from her distinctive perspective.

Anna masterfully blends abstraction and realism in her captivating work. She meticulously combines the intricate details found in cartography with the fluid lines, organic patterns, and rich textures inherent in nature. Her creative journey typically begins with a rigorous study of maps, complemented by photographs captured during commercial flights and compelling satellite imagery.

Her diverse artistic toolkit includes a rich combination of acrylic paint, collaged handmade papers, photographs, and monoprints. Anna often employs a technique of sanding back the surface of her work and applying multiple layers of glazes, resulting in a depth of texture and a nuanced visual richness that draws the viewer in. This tactile approach adds another dimension to her interpretations of the landscape.

Anna’s artistic foundation is robust, having earned a first-class BA (hons) in Fine Art (painting) from UWE. Demonstrating her commitment to continuous artistic development, she returned to UWE in 2008 to complete an MA in multi-disciplinary printmaking.

Her talent has been recognised both nationally and internationally, with her work featured in prestigious exhibitions. These include the renowned Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, the Mall Gallery Originals Contemporary Printmaking Exhibitions, the RWA Annual Exhibitions, and the Marzia Frozen gallery in Berlin.

Anna’s significant contributions to the art world are further evidenced by the inclusion of her work in several esteemed public collections. These include the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, the International Graphic Art Foundation in New York, USA, the Cadeques Contemporary Print Collection in Spain, Bristol City Council, and the Cheltenham and Gloucester Contemporary Print Collection. These acquisitions underscore the lasting impact and value of her artistic vision.

LIZ WILLIAMS EXHIBITION DATES:  26th JULY TO 20th SEPTEMBER 2025

Liz’s mastery spans porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware, where she uniquely applies a watercolour approach to her glazes. This technique allows for a fluidity and depth of colour that mirrors the delicate washes found in painting. While some of her creations serve a functional purpose, the driving force behind all her work is to evoke joy and aesthetic pleasure, transforming everyday objects into sources of delight and contemplation.

Liz donates all the money she makes to The Julian Trust, a vital Bristol charity that runs a Night Shelter for homeless individuals.

They offer emergency accommodation, hot meals, showers, clean clothes, and a safe, supportive environment, working in partnership with other local agencies. Uniquely, the Trust is entirely volunteer-run and funded by donations.

Founded in 1986 by Meg Grimes and a small group, it started as a soup kitchen, gradually expanding and moving through various temporary locations before securing its permanent home in Little Bishop Street in 1996.

Guided by the principle “To love a human being is to accept him as he is,” The Julian Trust provides immediate, dignified support, treating those they help as “guests.” Their work aims not just to address immediate needs but to be the crucial first step on the ladder out of homelessness, making a significant impact on Bristol’s rough sleeping community.

Liz is not on social media, but you can contact her here.

RACHAEL CAWLEY EXHIBITION DATES:   9th AUGUST TO 13th SEPTEMBER.

“Paint what you know, what you do, where you go, and what you see.” This philosophy underpins the large-scale canvas works of Clevedon-based artist Rachael Cawley. Her art delves into the intimate observations of her local environment, particularly the hidden details discovered during daily dog walks.

Drawing inspiration from Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, where characters are compelled to “say what you saw” due to the absence of written language, Rachael’s paintings serve as powerful visual journals. Each piece tells a story of her encounters with new places, often incorporating symbols, patterns, and varied lighting conditions to capture the nuances of different seasons and visits within a single frame.

Rachael’s overarching artistic theme is “seeing,” explored through distinct series. “The Long Walk Home Series” is characterised by its decorative quality, while “The Garden Series” offers a glimpse into fleeting realism and the richness of horticultural experiences. Her larger works are bold statements, reflecting a deep emotional bond with specific locations and moments.

A professional artist, Rachael holds an M.A. from 2008 and has been solely dedicated to her artistic practice since retiring from teaching in 2015.

If you’d like to learn more about Rachael’s art before visiting Studio 3, you can visit her website. Rachael is also on Facebook, X  and Instagram.

Finally, another reminder of the opening times, which are worth mentioning as they differ from those of the Craft Centre: Studio 3 is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Before we finish, I’d like to tell you a little about our last trip to Studio 3, when I popped next door to Studio 2, MosaiCraft. This place specialises in a unique type of pixel art that blends mini-mosaics with paint-by-numbers. It sounds like a fun and relaxing hobby, great for all ages, almost like a natural next step for anyone who enjoys Hama Beads.

However, despite how interesting the pixel art looked, what really caught my eye wasn’t the craft itself – I simply don’t have the time to pick up another hobby! Instead, I was completely captivated by their incredible selection of beads for jewellery making. They have a fantastic array of materials, shapes, and colours that you won’t find just anywhere. And the prices are absolutely brilliant! If you’re into making jewellery, or even just looking to start, this bead sale is an absolute must-see. You’ll find everything you need to spark your creativity without breaking the bank.

MosaiCraft is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11. 00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
