There is so much to attract visitors to Clevedon but over the years we have met so many people who have come from far and wide to experience the culinary delights of our favourite restaurant Junior Poon
Before I even entered the restaurant I fell in love with the magnificent, beautifully lit Grade II listed Georgian building on Hill Road. Hill Road was one of the first streets outside London to have street oil lamps and there is still one standing in front of the restaurant which just adds to its charm.
The restaurant is housed on two levels and the interior is elegant, very comfortable and relaxing. There is a wine bar in the basement serving an extensive Chinese tapas menu. The sumptuously furnished wine bar has a main area and a number of individual vaulted alcoves which provide privacy and feel quite intimate.
It seems that the most popular table is the one below. People call to reserve it months in advance and very often there is a waiting list of five to six groups. It is in a very secluded little raised area looking out on to Hill Road.
.Junior specializes in Peking and Szechuan cuisine with some Cantonese specialities and offers three House Set menus, two vegetarian alternatives and an extensive A La Carte menu. There is also a take – away service (orders by telephone only) and they are happy to cater for those who are gluten – free or have a food allergy which is really appreciated when you are dining in a group which nearly always includes those who fall into these categories.
Junior also does a number of Special Menus throughout the year to celebrate occasions such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, the Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and New Year in the UK. There are also very competitively priced lunch time and early bird menus.
When we have friends and family staying we always take them to Junior Poon’s because as well as the surroundings being so pleasing aesthetically, the food really is first class and the service is outstanding. The staff are highly professional, very attentive and pay great attention to detail. If you’re looking for a recommendation, the crispy prawn wantons with sweet and sour sauce sauce, the bang, bang chicken, the shredded duck pancakes and the crispy seaweed are delicious starters. In terms of mains, the steamed king prawns with garlic and soy sauce, the chicken fillet with orange liqueur sauce and the grilled king prawns Peking style are out of this world. We’ve never had a dessert because we are always so full but I’m sure they are delicious too! There is an extensive wine list but we go for the House wines which are excellent.
Finally if you fancy a night out but don’t particularly want to eat, then Thursday night is live music in the wine bar. Entry is free and performances begin at 8.00pm. And of course, if you do start to feel a little hungry, the Chinese tapas menu is always available. The next performance is Thursday 29th November starring Mark the Piano Man.
